The skull figure in the work inevitably evokes death, but the butterfly on it is, on the contrary, a part of life. The butterfly is also known among the people as a creature with a lifespan of one day. In this sense, the butterfly approaching the end of life confronts the skull, implying the transience of life, the inevitability of death, and that these two opposing concepts are actually a whole that complements each other.
