FASHION Rented Art History

Museum artworks are now for sale. History, to the highest bidder.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute is pairing 200 artworks with 200 garments. Sounds elegant. But when the curator's name is preceded by Jeff Bezos's name in the first paragraph of the text, art history isn't being written here—art history is being rented.

"The natural relationship between clothing and body." How sterile. How safe. How depoliticized.

Yet what's within that natural relationship? There are workshop fires in Bangladesh. There are hands sewing in eight-hour shifts. At the bottom of the global supply chain, there are bodies working for a few dollars a day. None of these appear as labels in the exhibition. Because the sponsor's logo is pasted over that label.

Fashion has always shown interest in art history. This is understandable. Clothing is also a cultural document, clothing is also a witness to an era. But what's happening today is not this.

What's happening today is this: Luxury brands and billionaire names are turning art institutions into legitimacy factories. When you enter the museum, you become "cultural." When you're exhibited alongside history, you become "permanent." When you become the subject of an academic text, you become "important."

And the cost? Leaving uncomfortable questions outside. Where is labor? Where is exploitation? Where is the class concentration behind luxury? All evaporated in the runway lights. While the "abstract body" is explained, the body's conditions of production are abstracted.

This is a matter of choice, not capacity. The previously held Superfine: Tailoring Black Style exhibition, sponsored by Louis Vuitton, presented a powerful, critical, genuinely curatorial framework. So it's possible. So an honest voice is possible even within capital.

But what's chosen today is different: Using history as decoration. Framing the past to legitimize today's power. Turning the museum into a showcase to polish the billionaire's image.

Condé Nast galleries are opening. The exhibition stops being a cultural event and becomes a power show. And within that power, art history has never been so helpless.

Fashion giants no longer just produce trends—they produce memory too. They decide what's important. They determine which body is visible. They design which question won't be asked.

And while doing this, they use the most powerful weapon: Art's historical authority. Because something with museum walls is legitimate. Something with academic text is important. Something with a billionaire sponsor is permanent.

The question remains: Will the museum remain a critical public space—or will it become the aesthetic CV of the wealthy?

When history is written in the shadow of the sponsor logo, what really remains?

Perhaps only that logo.
