This work is a reproduction study/étude inspired by the work of an Italian artist, in which the sgraffito (scratching into paint) technique has been applied over oil paint. The composition focuses on a close-up framing of only the eye and nose area of a face, serving as an exercise aimed at grasping the light-shadow work and anatomical precision found in classical portrait painting. The sgraffito technique was applied by scratching the surface with a pointed tool while the paint layer was still wet; in doing so, the underlying color layers or ground were revealed on the canvas, creating fine, linear texture marks. This method produces a distinctive effect that generates the dense linear texture visible on the surface and the sense of light refraction. The palette, dominated by dark blue, purple, and gray tones, renders the shadowed areas of the face in a deep and dramatic manner, while the subtle light highlights around the eye and the point of reflection in the pupil seek to capture the "liveliness" effect commonly seen in classical oil painting techniques. Rather than claiming to be an original composition, this work is a personal learning study aimed at understanding the technique of a master artist and exploring the effect of the sgraffito method on texture and depth.
