Flowers in a vase

This still life work, created using mixed media — oil pastels applied over oil paint — depicts a bouquet of flowers in peach, cream, and orange tones arranged in a dark red vase. An image found online was used as a source of inspiration; however, the work was reconstructed with a personal interpretation rather than being a direct copy. After the background and color layers were established with oil paint, the petals of the flowers were accentuated with thick black contour lines drawn in oil pastel, creating a layered effect that combines the textural and visual distinctions of both materials. The linear and graphic quality of the pastel, together with the fluid, soft transitions of the oil paint, lend the work an expressive character. While the combination of lavender, blue, and light green tones in the background, rendered with loose brushstrokes, creates an atmospheric ground, the deep red-burgundy color of the vase forms a strong anchoring point at the lower portion of the composition. Although the work draws from a real reference, it has been transformed into an original artistic interpretation through the use of mixed media, color choices, and linear accents.
