Incubation

This artwork does not seal an escape from the heavy pressure of societal norms, memorized identities, and the outside world upon the individual; rather, it seals the quiet and deeply rooted resistance sustained against them. This figure, with its back turned to the viewer, represents not a passive withdrawal, but a determination to reject all the masks presented to the outside world and lock onto one's own existential center. The cold blue wings covering the back do not symbolize a soul that has yet to break free and take flight; they symbolize a heavy, rigid, and insulating shield woven to protect against the world. While traditional wing symbolism focuses on flying freely, in this work the process evolves toward a darker and more stark direction: "I donned this shell not to fly, but to build an insurmountable wall between myself and the world. I did not flee — I simply withdrew into my own darkness." The deep burgundy and blood-red texture in the background represents the suppressed agony, inner conflict, and explosive potential of the soul in the moments just before it hardens into a shell. The invisibility of the face is a response to the depersonalization created by societal norms; and the red hair is the first spark of the inner fire kept alive beneath that shell. This piece is that first great hardening phase that will initiate the locking into a protective cocoon (Second Piece) and the porcelain awakening (Third Piece). Mixed Media on 120x100 Canvas
