The Voice Passing Through the Classic
Tuğba Çakal knows something: Emotion knows no class, no period, no geography. The figures in the Proud Farmer series carry this on their faces - neither romanticized nor pitied. Simply there, completely themselves.
While looking at Proud Farmer No4, the shadow of the Renaissance falls, but the work doesn't remain in that shadow. Earth tones, warm browns, soft light transitions - these are words of a language known for centuries. But Çakal says something different with these words. In the figure's gaze there is neither surrender nor complaint. There is only a weight - carried, accepted, silently claimed. This is the most difficult thing psychological portraiture achieves: making an inner state visible from the outside.
The same feeling exists in the mother-child composition in Silent Refuge. Two figures in an ambiguous space, clinging to each other. The background becomes insignificant because the real place is inside that embrace. Here Çakal uses the schema of Renaissance iconography but empties its burden - not sacred, but human. In Memory of the Body, silence speaks differently: that red line is not a wound, but a testimony. A single mark asking what the body carries, what it cannot forget.
Çakal's brush is patient. Layer by layer, advancing with transparent transitions. This technical choice is not random - like a respect shown to time. Masters used to work this way. But masters didn't always ask such clear questions.
Tuğba Çakal has inherited the language of classical painting and passed it through herself. What remains is a voice both familiar and belonging to today. This voice is the kind that will resonate in collections for a long time.
