Silent Bargaining; The Rejection of Baltacı Pasha

Title: The Refusal of Baltacı Paşa Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 90 × 125 cm Year: 2025 Artwork Description: The Refusal of Baltacı Paşa was inspired by the historical accounts surrounding Baltacı Mehmed Paşa and Tsarina Catherine following the Pruth Campaign of 1711. Rather than debating the historical accuracy of the event, the work addresses the conflict between moral choice, will, state responsibility, and personal interest. The figure of Baltacı Mehmed Paşa, positioned at the center of the composition, has been conceived as a character who refuses the offer presented to him. This refusal has been interpreted not merely as an individual stance, but as a symbolic expression of honor, loyalty, and moral integrity. In this way, the work aims to connect a historical narrative with contemporary human and ethical questions. The painting employs oil on canvas technique. The use of light and shadow was developed under the influence of Caravaggio, one of the prominent artists of the Baroque period, and his approach to dramatic expression. The contrast between strong highlights and dark areas brings to the fore the psychological states of the figures and the dramatic atmosphere of the scene. The sources of inspiration for the work include Ottoman history, cultural memory studies, and the reinterpretation of historical events through art. In particular, my interest in the traces of Ottoman civilization across the Balkans and Anatolia has shaped a significant portion of my work. The Refusal of Baltacı Paşa has been conceived not merely as a reenactment of a historical account, but as a symbolic narrative that invites reflection on the concepts of power, conscience, and character.
