I modeled this sculpture in clay, cast it in plaster, then reapplied a moulded mask of its face to its face and gave it a shellac finish. The mirror frame is an integral part of the artwork, providing it with its own unique space.
While starting to work on this piece back in 2010, I was reminded of a story from Rilke's The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge, which I had greatly enjoyed reading as a teenager. It was about people wearing faces like masks, and sometimes wearing them away prematurely. The non-face.
The astronaut underwent some changes in August 2026 after returning from an exhibition. While readjusting it, I found the mirror frame, and of course, if you have a mirror, you look into it. With the mirror frame, the sculpture started to come to life, and I gave it the black eyes and moustache that men from Upper Egypt and Nubia like to wear.

The astronaut represents someone who feels they do not belong on Earth, but have fallen from the sky.
The astronaut underwent some changes in August 2026 after returning from an exhibition with a broken nose. While readjusting it, I thought about the impenetrable, sphinx-like expression it had had at the Venice exhibition, and the amusing coincidence that the Sphinx's nose had also broken off. The mirror frame was found at the same time, and of course, if you have a mirror, you look into it. With the mirror frame, the sculpture started to come to life, and I gave it the black eyes and moustache that men from Upper Egypt and Nubia like to wear.
Finally, the astronaut has landed and the work is complete.
