What an Old Photograph Evokes is a multi-layered mixed media composition that brings together painted surfaces, cut layers and relief elements. The title of the work places the viewer in a specific mental position at first glance: this is not a photograph itself, but what that photograph evokes. Not the memory, but the aftershock vibrations of the memory. This distinction is in complete harmony with the visual language of the work; because the composition conveys not an objective reality, but a subjective inner experience. The dominant color is blue and its tones. This color family, ranging from dark navy blue to light sky blue in different intensities, is the universal carrier of nostalgia, distance and longing for the past. Warm contrasts — red, orange, pink and brown — are scattered on this cool ground. These islands of warmth symbolize the emotional core of the memory, those parts that are still alive; just like the single bright spot that catches the eye in a faded photograph. The formal language is dynamic and multi-layered. Sharp angular planes leaning against and overlapping each other make visible the fragmented structure of memory. Memories are not whole, but fragmented and overlapping; one scene covers another, one emotion remains under another. The metal oxide element in the upper left corner stands like the only fixed direction sign in this fluid memory universe — perhaps time itself, perhaps the moment that photograph was taken. The tension between painted surfaces and physically cut and placed layers adds a separate depth to the work. The viewer does not just look at a painting; they follow the traces of the past that are both flat and relief, both visual and tactile. What an Old Photograph Evokes describes how memory works with a visual language: fragmented, colorful, sometimes blurry sometimes sharp, but always emotionally alive. The work takes the viewer to their own memories — because what is evoked is not only the artist's photograph, but each viewer's own yellowed frame.
